If your planned destination is through cold and snowy climates, always be prepared for the weather. In preparation of a breakdown, have the correct clothing: a warm jacket, boots, mittens, and a hat. Pack a nice warm quilt should you have to spend a few hours in the cold. Staying warm will help prevent hypothermia from setting in.  

A pre-trip checklist should have bottled water and a box of high-calorie energy bars should you happen to be in an lone location. Whether you’re a smoker or not, carry some water-proof matches. A fire will keep you warm and smoke may draw the awareness of rescuers. Review at your pre-trip checklist well before taking off and make sure you are ready for what may happen down the highway.
